Make a Difference for India’s Stray & Community Dogs

August 25, 2025

International Dog Day reminds us of the joy and companionship our furry friends bring and the many who still need support. While dogs across Singapore are celebrated, community dogs in India face ongoing challenges. Recently, India’s Supreme Court reversed a controversial mass-removal plan for Delhi’s stray dogs. Instead, the Court now mandates sterilisation, vaccination, and return of healthy dogs to their communities, excluding only those that are aggressive or rabid. Authorities must also create designated feeding zones to ensure humane, community-driven care.

This decision is a huge win for animal welfare, but many of us in Singapore may not even know this is happening. That's why we're sharing this story with you today.

Why It Matters

Delhi alone is home to around 1 million community dogs, and relocating them to shelters is neither feasible nor humane without sufficient infrastructure.

Well-managed Trap–Neuter–Vaccinate (TNV) programmes remain one of the most scientifically sound and effective ways to control and care for the stray dog population.
